I have been debating endlessly over how to optimally begin this endeavor and what to say.
Should it be a narrative? “This is me and this is why I am doing this?”
Should it be roughly written and then polished by AI?
Perhaps just a raw meta post that breaks the 4th wall while talking about how I was thinking of starting the post.
In the end I decided to just begin and as they say in Monty Python and the quest for the Holy Grail “Get on with it”.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and its about time I got underway in telling my own tale.
So here goes.
My name is Dylan and it has always been my dream to sail off into the sunset.
In the last year that dream took many steps towards a reality as I proceeded to move to a coastal city, complete many RYA certifications and landed up purchasing my first sailing yacht.
I see myself as only being at the start of a fantastic journey and hopefully one that will provide me with stories worth sharing. In my time speaking to other sailors, I am entranced by the memorable stories that they tell as them seem to be ones worth telling.
Here is one that I particularly love:
”My friends were due to sail from the Canary Islands across the Atlantic Ocean to South America. This was in the 80’s and I knew that the 3 of them were all smokers who enjoyed a good puff so I prepared a couple cartons for them for the multi week journey as they sailed across the ocean.
I flew over, gave them a present and they were overjoyed and appreciative of my thoughtful gift.
2000 cigarettes in hand, they bid our farewells and happily vanished over the horizon.
It was not long before they came to realize that they only had 20 matched on board and had forgotten to take a lighter with them.
The rest of the journey was defined by having the entire crew woken up each time a new match was lit and many shifts being focused on passing on the lit end of a flame.
Eventually they resorted to some extreme measures to get a flame lit out of the engine ignition plugs with some gasoline rags - a feat that nearby cost them the boat.
”
Im not sure how accurate some of these details are or how well my friend remembered them but one thing is for certain - when sailing, alot of crazy stuff can happen.
So far I have really enjoyed the enormous amount of information and knowledge there has been to absorb in regards to sailing.
It is a craft which requires every skill: planning, geometry, maths, physics, chemistry, electronics…
Its also probably why I encounter so many engineers around the marina
Anyways, I am glad to say that this first post is out the way.
Im not overthinking it too much but you can expect to hear about my own escapades and adventures here, if you subscribe!
Some thing to look forward to:
- Upcoming mile-building course (300 nautical miles)
- RYA Coastal skipper
- Numerous day sails along the coast
- Hobbies and project on board and I maintain and install new systems (solar, smart boat stuff)
Seeya around! I hope you enjoy the writing style and content. Always open to feedback;
Dylan
